The overall goal of the present work was to offer an assessment of the current situation in Turkey to suggest areas of improvement and changes to advance web accessibility practices. To meet this goal, we conducted an online survey.
The purpose of this study is to enable the transfer of tacit knowledge and experience between these two foundations by creating “learning bridges” through the use of technology in order to achieve sustainability in local crafts in long term. The qualitative multi-method approach adopted, which included the use of participatory design methodology and ethnographic field study in the Mardin. The study indicated that “learning bridges” could be formed and thus facilitate the transfer of tacit knowledge and experience between the academy and workshops through the use of technology. A sustainable educational model presenting a new interactive experience was recommended in light of the findings.

With its original traditions and values dating back to hundreds of years in seven different regions, Turkey distinguishes by its own cosmopolite culture from the others. The local sites of the regions also differ by their aspects reflecting the old culture at both the content and the design level with original tools like "virtual graveyard visit, condolence function etc." Benefiting from the Internet technologies creatively and pragmatically, the sites actually enable the citizens (townsman) who live geographically apart to share the traditions and values of their culture. In other words, by providing the familiar cultural experience on the web, the sites enable a kind of virtual access to hometown. Being a former step of a larger study, this study aims to investigate qualitatively this new existence of the local cultures on the Internet by focusing on the content and design aspects of the sites involved.

This paper investigates the influence of culture on understanding metaphors in GUIs and aims to generate guidelines for choosing appropriate metaphors for users from different cultures. Considering the dual-coded structure of compound metaphorical icons – composed of two major units: image and label – this study evaluates the main hypothesis that understanding of graphical and textual elements of the metaphors differs due to real world and language experiences of the users.
Research on the cross-cultural understanding of different interface aspects is an area of growing interest in human-computer interaction discipline. This paper mainly investigates the influence of culture on understanding metaphors in graphical user interfaces. Considering the dual coded structure of compound metaphorical icons which is composed of two major units: image and label, this study evaluates the main hypothesis that understanding of graphical and textual elements of the metaphors differs due to the real world and language experiences of the users. An empirical study on a French e-learning site -based on a spatial “Campus” metaphor- was conducted with 68 Turkish and French students.
The contemporary theory of metaphor defines the metaphor as a major and indispensable part of our ordinary, conventional way of conceptualizing the world and it asserts that the metaphors are used to define our relationship with the physical environment and to create a context of communication.

Mobile technology is a new frontier for accessibility. Although mobile developers need solid guidelines to provide accessible experiences, there is a limited number of empirical research on mobile accessibility of different mobile platforms that work through various assistive technologies. In this context, more information is needed to understand both usage patterns and hardware/software platforms to guide decisions to meet the needs of people with disabilities who use mobile devices.
